Head Master's Welcome
Welcome to St Andrew's
As the new Head Master of St Andrew's, I am delighted to welcome you to our wonderful School, where my family and I already feel at home.
Founded in 1934 with just two teachers and eight boys, the School now has over 300 pupils.
The main School building was constructed by the architect Alfred Waterhouse, perhaps better known for designing the Natural History Museum.
An engaging curriculum and outstanding pastoral care
At St Andrew's, you won't find a one-size-fits-all approach to education; instead, we offer strong, personalised academic and pastoral care, and are ambitious for your children, so their potential is fully realised.
Academic attainment and outstanding pastoral care are synonymous with St Andrew’s and the children move on to a range of top day and boarding schools at 13+, with a high percentage awarded scholarships. All of this is done with a sense of proportion; we want St Andrew’s pupils to be stretched, not stressed, to enjoy learning, and be considerate, cheerful and well-rounded when they finish their time at the School.
We achieve this through our supportive and nurturing teachers who love their subjects, know each child individually, and balance instruction and encouragement with kindness, perspective and humour.
A happy and secure environment where childhood matters
St Andrew’s is set in 54 acres of beautiful woodland and playing fields, where boys and girls have the secure space to enjoy the enchanting world of childhood – whether that be playing sport, performing in music or drama, orienteering, climbing trees, den building, or just playing with their friends.
Making extensive use of our grounds, and the sense of freedom and well-being that this creates, is an important element of the St Andrew’s education, and our outdoor learning programme, along with the well-established Forest School, are well-used by our younger children.
Impressive facilities, in continual development
St Andrew’s has excellent facilities for outside sports and activities but, importantly, our provision does not stop there.
In 2017 we opened a state-of-the-art sports centre, with a twenty-five-metre indoor swimming pool, sports hall, dance studio and climbing wall.
Over the next eighteen months we’ll be re-developing our facilities to create a performing arts, DT and art centre, refurbishing our boarding accommodation, and further enhancing the use of technology and ICT in our classrooms.
Children at St Andrew’s will continue to enjoy an expanding range of opportunities.
A partnership with busy families
We know how complicated it can be juggling the needs of young children alongside busy, working lives.
Parents can drop their children for Breakfast Club from 7.30am through the week. Supper is available for Years 3 to 8, until 6.30pm, with specialist activities and clubs after supper on a few evenings.
Flexi and weekly boarding are additional options, but there is no Saturday school, giving families time together over the weekends.
Come and see us
The best way to experience St Andrew’s is to come and see us. You can meet the children and staff, see classes, sports, music and activities in action, and experience our glorious setting.
Prospective parents can book a place on an Open Morning here, or contact our Director of Admissions, Jane Taylor, directly to arrange an individual visit.
Thank you for your interest. I hope you’ll come and visit us.
