St Andrew’s was delighted to welcome author, Colin Parsons to school for our ‘Able Writer’s Day.’ 14 Year 6 pupils represented the school at this whole-day event which was also attended by 19 pupils from Moulsford, The Oratory and St Neot’s. Before becoming a full-time writer in his 40s, Colin explained he had tried many different jobs including working at a Christmas tree ‘factory’, as a driver and on a farm. He is proof that it is never too late to fulfil your dreams! During the day, he gave the pupils valuable tips on how to develop characters, describe locations and extend descriptive language. Colin signed and donated collection of his books to the library including his most well-known ‘House of Darke’ and ‘The Curious World of Shelley Vendor.’ The children really enjoyed this literary event and we look forward to a follow-up visit sometime in the future
Well done to all performers at the end of term Christmas Carol concert. Everyone coped admirably with our last minute change of venue and we very much enjoyed the experience of visiting the impressive Douai Abbey. The choirs all sang beautifully and the readers spoke clearly and with confidence. A great finish to a long and busy term.
The beautiful Falklands Memorial Chapel was the most recent venue for our school concert. The concert showcased the talents of our pupils in choirs, orchestras, ensembles and from soloists from age 7 to 13. All the pupils performed confidently and the whole event was a great success.
Year 5 were absolutely outstanding in their drama production of 'Just Like Us'. All of Year 5 had speaking parts in the play about evacuees. The play was rehearsed in a very short period of time as forms and the whole year group only performed together for the first time on the actual day. The play was very polished and very funny. Well done to all of Year 5.
The U13 girls hockey team travelled to Millfield School for the West Championships with high hopes. Last year they had won the tournament and had played in the U13 Hockey Nationals. Despite great effort and some super play, their luck was not in this year. Well done to all those girls who represented the school at this event.
At the end of September, Year 5 pupils travelled to Oxfordshire for a team-building weekend with the Bushcraft Company. Pupils camped out under a bivvy shelter and showed remarkable resilience when the rains fell! Pupils learned safety drills, how to build dens and enjoyed meals by the campfire. All the pupils displayed excellent behaviour and were a credit to the school.
Forty-nine pupils recently took their ABRSM music examinations. Well done to all pupils for all their efforts and successes. Special mention goes to the seven singers who achieved a distinction, and the two flautists also. There were also three pupils who achieved Grade 5, and another impressive three pupils who achieved Grade 6. Quite a benchmark to set for future years!
Year 2 had a wonderful, woodland adventure to celebrate the end of their time in Pre-Prep. Mums and dads were invited to come along and join in, starting with an orienteering course around the grounds, followed by a scavenger hunt, exploring the woods, campfire songs and toasting marshmallows. A lovey evening of sticks, smoke and smiles!
The end of term Summer Concert was a great success. Pupils from Year 2 upwards sang and played in a fantastic display of musical talent. The audience were treated to an evening of choir performances, string quartets, concert and big band performances, saxophone group, senior cellos and full orchestral pieces. The repertoire ranged from Verdi and Vivaldi to Elton John and Coldplay. We are very proud of all pupils' confidence, effort and talent.
This term has been a busy and successful one for the Music Department. Following their fine performance at the Falklands Memorial Chapel; the choir performed at Winchester Cathedral in May. The service was well attended and the choir sang beautifully. There have also been concerts from Years 2, 3 ,4 and 8. We are all looking forward to the final performance of the year, which will be our Summer Concert at the end of the month.
