Music plays an important part in the life of the school. The department is well resourced and is located in purpose-built accommodation. It is staffed by one full-time specialist with fourteen visiting instrumental and singing teachers.

Every child has classroom music in the curriculum and the opportunity is provided for all to have individual instrumental or singing lessons. Currently there are over 300 lessons scheduled every week.

Two fundamental ideas underpin the operation of the department:

  • Giving the opportunity for pupils of all abilities and aspirations to participate in musical activities at an appropriate level
  • Recognising and nurturing individual talent so that the musical pupil may be challenged and enabled to realise their potential.

To achieve these aims there are performance projects which are based in the classroom and which involve whole year groups. These culminate in annual Form Concerts in which the pupils perform solos, choral and instrumental ensembles.

In Years 3-8 there is time allocated each week for choir and ensemble rehearsals. These include the Junior and Senior Chapel Choirs, Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Brass Band, Advanced Brass Group, Flute Group, Saxophone Group, Recorder Consort, String Group, String Quartets from beginners to advanced players, Cello Groups and the Guitar Group. Every child who plays an orchestral instrument takes part in a group at an appropriate level. The Junior and Senior Chapel Choirs lead the worship and perform an anthem at the weekly Chapel Services. The ensembles perform at the annual Summer Concert.

In the Pre-Prep there is a classroom scheme which allows every child to have a taster of the violin and all pupils from Years 2-4 learn the recorder. This inspires many to take up individual lessons.

There are performance opportunities at all levels ranging from Grandparents' Day, the Section Music Competition, Speech Day as well as music-drama productions.

Additional support is offered to children preparing for senior school music awards and National Children's Orchestra auditions. Many pupils are entered for graded music examinations each term via the Trinity / Guildhall and the Associated Board. In recent years a significant number of examination results have been at Grade VI-VII level. Since 2002 twelve pupils have successfully auditioned and participated in the National Children's Orchestras. Music Scholarships and awards have been gained to many senior schools.
